Alfonzo game-ending double play seals win

LANCASTER, Pa. – Giovanny Alfonzo turned a double play with one out in the tenth inning and closed out an 8-7 extra inning win for the High Point Rockers on Tuesday night at Lancaster’s Clipper Magazine Stadium.

In the top of the 10th, the Rockers started the inning with Alfonzo at second.  Randy Norris grounded out to second to move Alfonzo to third.  Johnny Field then grounded into the hole at shortstop and Lancaster’s off-balance throw to the plate was not in time to catch Alfonzo as the Rockers went ahead 8-7.

In the bottom of the tenth, the Barnstormers started the frame with Kelly Dugan at second.  Reliever John Fasola struck out Melvin Mercedes for the first out before Anderson De La Rosa singled to left, moving Dugan to third.  Fasola then induced Anthony Peroni to ground the ball up the middle where Alfonzo made the play, stepped on second and fired to first to secure the double play and the win.

High Point reliever Preston Gainey earned the win, his first of the year.  Field finished with three hits as did McOwen.  Cardullo had two hits including his home run.  Alfonzo also finished with a pair of hits.

The Rockers scored in the top of the first when Johnny Field singled to lead off the game and would come around to score on a single by Jerry Downs.

Lancaster scored twice in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Dugan and an infield groundout by LeDarious Clark.

In the fourth, Jared Mitchell and James McOwen drew walks to put runners on first and second before Mitchell stole third. Alfonzo grounded out to the pitcher with Mitchell scoring to tie the game at 2-2.

High Point extended its lead to 5-2 with three runs in the sixth.  McOwen and Alfonzo singled and Joe Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Field’s ground rule double to left plated two and Johnson scored on a groundout by Stephen Cardullo.

Lancaster regained the lead in the seventh. High Point starter Cooper Casad departed with one out and runners on first and second following a walk and a single.  Kyle Halbohn came on in relief and allowed a run-scoring single to Cleuluis Rondon to make it a 5-2 game.  After a walk to Trayvon Robinson to load the bases, Alejandro De Aza followed with a grand slam that put the Barnstormers in front 7-5.

In the top of the eighth, Michael Russell drew a one-out walk and was replaced at first by pinch-runner J.R. DiSarcina.  Stephen Cardullo then homered down the left field line to tie the game at 7-7.

Dylan James came out of the bullpen to put the Barnstormers down in order in the eighth and Gainey threw a scoreless ninth to get the game to extra innings.

Casad went 6.1 innings in the start, allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out a career-high nine.  Casad left in the seventh with a 5-3 lead.

The Rockers and Barnstormers will play again tomorrow at Clipper Magazine Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
