High Point, NC - The High Point Rockers locker room is full of stories. In a new story series titled “Highway to High Point”, we take a look at Stephen Cardullo’s journey to the High Point Rockers.
Stephen Andrew Cardullo was born Aug. 31st, 1987 in Hollywood Florida. He was a crucial member of the 2009 Florida State Seminoles team that won the Tallahassee Super Regional.
Cardullo came to Tallahassee as a preferred walk on and started his career as a right handed designated hitter. His first career at bat as a Seminole ended with a home run, cementing him as a heavy hitter in their rotation.
By his junior season, Cardullo had worked his way to a starting position as the Seminoles shortstop. His defense, combined with a .387 batting average, led Florida State to a Super Regional championship and an appearance in the 2009 College World Series.
He began his college career as a walk on designated hitter and ended it a first team All-American shortstop.
In 2010, Cardullo was drafted in the 24th round of the amateur draft to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He played in the Arizona farm system for two more years before his release in March of 2012.
Cardullo was signed by the Colorado Rockies on January 6th, 2016 to a minor league contract. He made his Major League Baseball debut on Aug. 8th, 2016 in a double header against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Six years after getting drafted by Arizona, Cardullo hit a home run in his MLB debut, which also happened to be his 29th birthday. Not satisfied with a one run homer, he hit a grand slam later that evening to cap off a once in a lifetime career start.
Later that season he was assigned to the Rockies AAA affiliate, the Albuquerque Isotopes, following a fractured wrist. He signed his minor league contract with the intent to come back after a few months.
Since signing with the Rockies, Cardullo has bounced around between minor league teams before getting released in May of the 2017 season. He signed a contract with the High Point Rockers on April 11th 2019.
Cardullo’s career has been defined by his hard work and determination, and an overall tenacity to continue playing baseball. He brings a level of experience to this Rockers team that is hard to find.
You can see Cardullo and the rest of the High Point Rockers at BB&T Point on Friday June 14th at 6:30pm for our Military Appreciation Night. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free camo-themed Rockers T-shirt. To purchase tickets, call (336)888-1000 or visit www.highpointrockers.com.
