Rockers take game one of doubleheader

Bridgewater Township, NJ – The High Point Rockers take game three of the four game series against the Somerset Patriots after a decisive 5-2 victory in game one of a two game double header. A strong pitching outing form Stephen Johnson paired with the hot bat of Quincy Latimore, who recorded his fifth home run in six games, was the recipe for a Rockers win.

In the bottom of the first the Somerset Patriots began the scoring when Ramon Flores singled to right field that brought in Craig Massey to score. The Patriots were off to a hot start following a double from Mike Ohlman that scored Flores. The Rockers didn’t take long to answer the Patriots early scoring, as Josh Mazzola responded by hitting a three-run home run to give the Rockers a 3-2 lead in the top of the second.

After a rocky start, Stephen Johnson settled into a groove on the mound. From the bottom of the third, Johnson retired eight straight Somerset batters.

In the top of the seventh, Quincy Latimore continued his hot streak by hitting a two run home run, which is his fifth deep ball in the past six games. Those two insurance runs put the Rockers up 5-2.

Sam Runion came on in relief for Johnson in the bottom of the seventh to earn his first save of the season. Stephen Johnson earned the win throwing six innings, allowing four hits and two runs. Johnson is now 2-0 this season with a 3.27 ERA.

The Rockers will be back in action later tonight at 6:35PM at TD Bank Ballpark for game two of the doubleheader. The Rockers return home May 17th against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. To get your tickets, visit www.highpointrockers.com  or call 336-888-1000.
