HIGH POINT, NC - In what was a night of firsts for the High Point Rockers organization, the Rockers found themselves celebrating an impressive win at the end of the night. Led by Dante Bichette Jr. and Matt Sergey, the Rockers left BB&T Point with a 3-0 win on Thursday night.
After three innings of no runs, Dante Bichette Jr. hit the first home run in franchise history at home, giving the Rockers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
“I was looking for something soft,” Bichette Jr. said about his home run. “He just called a strike that was a little bit outside, so I was looking out there. He gave me something that came back over the plate and I just put the swing on it.”
The crowd was amazing for Thursday home opener, bringing life to BB&T Point for the first time, something that left a lasting impression for the players.
“To me personally, that’s the most important thing that I like in a place to play is a good audience,” Bichette Jr. said “I want to put on a good show for the audience and they really brought it tonight, they were booing when they were supposed too and cheering when they needed too, it was a fun time.”
Bichette Jr. would later hit a single to center field, allowing Myles Schroder and Hector Gomez to bring in the final two runs of the night for the Rockers.
Pitcher Matt Sergey pitched six innings of no hit baseball before exiting the game. Sergey was granted the win after an impressive performance. Roy Merritt was handed the loss after pitching five innings, allowing six hits and one run. Trevor Frank would be awarded his second save of the season after helping seal the win for the Rockers.
The Rockers will be back in action Friday May 3rd at 7:00PM to continue their four game series against the Sugar Land Skeeters.
